Art Presentation for Peace Speech
Hello Hello !
My name is Hisakazu Suzuki.
I am an artist and designer from Japan.
Recently, I started forgetting my Japanese, so please forgive me for reading my English speech today.
I am very happy to join this Peace Conference.
I would like to thank the gallery and everyone involved for this opportunity.
Thank you very much.
In Japan, I create large public monuments and sculptures.
I also work on product design and brand development.
About ten years ago, I started to expand overseas, and my first big step was last year at Art Basel Miami.
There, I was lucky to meet Kumi, who lives here in Los Angeles.
On the way back, I met Jessica, and that meeting led to our two-person exhibition today.
Now, my theme is “the Moon,” and I feel it connects deeply with this Peace Conference.
Japanese people have long believed in the spiritual power of the moon.
We even call it “Otsukisama,” adding words of respect to the moon.
The moon is a symbol of good fortune.
In Japanese, “Tsuki,” meaning moon, also means “luck.”
So, the moon brings good luck and positive energy.
My work also explores gravity between the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun.
The gravity of the moon keeps our planet in balance.
I believe this balance is a key to peace.
If balance is lost, everything breaks.
The secret of peace for humanity may lie in gravity.
That is why I use the moon as my theme.
There is only one moon.
People around the world can look at the same moon.
Let us put our wishes into that shared light.
Therefore, my theme is the moon.
In the next room, you can see my moon-themed artworks.
I chose the form of kakejiku (hanging scroll), originally used for viewing Buddhist teachings.
This time, I expressed the moon as “Moonlight.”
In Japanese painting, the moon is often expressed in silver.
I used handmade Japanese paper with pure silver and other materials.
I also brought a new piece that I will present next year at ART EXPO New York.
I was inspired by the craters that show the passage of time and expressed them using 24-karat gold leaf.
It is a hanging scroll seen from the moon’s point of view.
The clothes, shirts, and scarves I wear today are also designed with the moon theme.
I hope you can feel what lies beyond the moon.
Thank you very much for listening.
